Fire is a film by Deepa Mehta that was one of the first mainstream films in India to explicitly show homosexual relations. It stars Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. The film is about two characters, Radha and Sita, who are married and eventually fall in love with each other. Radha, the older woman, remains bound by tradition while Sita refuses to accept misfortune and wishes to break free. After being shunned by their husbands, Radha and Sita seek comfort in each other. Overjoyed at finding satisfaction in this unusual manner, they resolve to continue it in secret. They are eventually caught by Radha’s husband and she decides to move out and move in with Sita.
