so for my class, which is basically Poli Sci 101, my professor was like “We cover a lot of controversial topics and I like to bring in speakers.  I like to keep it balanced, so if I bring in someone who is pro-choice, I might bring in someone else who is pro-death penalty or against gay marriage”

And I was like, starting to get really nervous.  Like, what if he actually brought in someone? Am I going to sit there and listen to them say homosexuality is wrong and gay people don’t deserve equal rights?  And what if everyone else in the class agrees with him? And all of a sudden, the classroom became a really uncomfortable place.  There’s a difference between saying “I support the death penalty” or “I think we need less gun control” and saying “I think these people don’t deserve the same rights as everyone else because their abominations”.  That goes from being a political issue to being personal and I’m considering telling him that if he decides to bring in someone like that, then I am not coming in that day, because I am not going to sit there and listen to that shit.
